Family reunification

Make room for your family in the plan

For many people, when and how a spouse or child can join them matters as much as the work visa. Family reunification is available to eligible Blue Card holders, but identity, relationship, insurance, financial and consular requirements still need to be reviewed.

Does your spouse need German?

For a spouse joining an EU Blue Card holder, advance proof of German language skills is generally not required. Learning German can still make life and work easier. A different residence title for the principal applicant may change the applicable conditions.

Documents and timing

Each family member needs an appropriate application and supporting documents. Marriage or birth records, valid passports, health cover and residence details may be relevant. Always use the current checklist of the German mission responsible for the applicant's place of residence.
