Work visa

The Blue Card is one route, not the only route

The right residence title depends on what you have today. A job offer, your qualification, relevant experience, language skills and funds each affect the options available to you.

At a glance

  • If you have an eligible academic or vocational qualification and an offer of qualified employment, a skilled worker visa may be possible.
  • If you have no job offer yet, the Opportunity Card may allow you to look for work in Germany.
  • Eligibility can be based on a recognised qualification or a points route. You must also show that you can support yourself.
  • With a concrete offer, start by checking the Blue Card and skilled worker routes.

Skilled worker visa

If you have an eligible academic or vocational qualification and an offer of qualified employment, a skilled worker visa may be possible. Its conditions differ from the Blue Card. Some occupations require a professional licence.

02

Opportunity Card

If you have no job offer yet, the Opportunity Card may allow you to look for work in Germany. Eligibility can be based on a recognised qualification or a points route. You must also show that you can support yourself. It is a job search title, not automatic permission for permanent full time employment.

Let the job offer guide the first comparison

With a concrete offer, start by checking the Blue Card and skilled worker routes. Without one, examine the Opportunity Card and your real prospects in the labour market. Apply for a visa that matches the actual purpose of your stay.
