Questions worth asking before you apply

EU Blue Card

Is the EU Blue Card a German passport?

No. The Blue Card is a residence title for qualified work. A passport follows German citizenship and a separate passport application.

Do I need a job offer for the Blue Card?

Yes. A qualifying concrete offer or employment contract is required. If you have no offer yet, consider whether an Opportunity Card or a job search from abroad suits you.

What is the Blue Card salary threshold in 2026?

The general threshold is €50,700 gross per year. A reduced threshold of €45,934.20 applies to eligible shortage occupations and certain other groups. The precise category must be checked.

Do I need a German certificate?

There is no general statutory German certificate requirement for the Blue Card itself. Employers or regulated professions may require language skills. German also matters for settlement and citizenship.

Work visa

Is an anabin listing of my university enough?

The assessment of the institution and the specific degree both matter. If the result is unclear, a ZAB Statement of Comparability may be needed.

Can a UAE resident apply in Dubai?

That depends on habitual residence and consular jurisdiction. At the time of review, the German mission in the UAE states a residence timing condition for national visa applications in Dubai. Check its current page before applying.

Permanent residence

When can I apply for permanent residence?

Some Blue Card holders can apply after 27 months with A1 German or 21 months with B1 German, provided all other conditions are met.

Citizenship

Is permanent residence always required for naturalisation?

No. The residence title you hold matters, and some titles that can lead to a permanent right of residence may also be sufficient. Check your individual status.

When can I apply for citizenship?

The current general rule is at least five years of lawful residence with the other naturalisation requirements. The general three year route ended in October 2025.

Family reunification

Does the spouse of a Blue Card holder need German?

Advance proof of German is generally not required in this family reunification route. The other requirements and documents still apply.
