EU Blue Card

What are the German EU Blue Card requirements in 2026?

The Blue Card is for qualified professionals with a suitable job in Germany. Salary matters, but the job and qualification matter just as much.

At a glance

  • You need a concrete offer or contract for qualifying employment lasting at least six months.
  • In most cases, you also need a German degree or a foreign qualification that can be shown to be comparable.
  • The general minimum is €50,700 in annual gross salary.
  • Approval from the Federal Employment Agency may be needed where the reduced threshold applies.

What does the Blue Card actually give you?

The EU Blue Card is a residence title for qualified employment in Germany. It is neither permanent residence nor citizenship. That distinction is useful when planning beyond your first job. Before asking when you might obtain a German passport, establish whether your offer meets the requirements for a work residence title.

You need a concrete offer or contract for qualifying employment lasting at least six months. In most cases, you also need a German degree or a foreign qualification that can be shown to be comparable. Certain tertiary qualifications and specific IT experience can qualify under separate rules. A regulated profession, such as some healthcare roles, may require permission to practise as well.

The salary figures for 2026

The general minimum is €50,700 in annual gross salary. A reduced threshold of €45,934.20 applies to eligible shortage occupations, qualifying recent graduates and some other categories. Approval from the Federal Employment Agency may be needed where the reduced threshold applies. Gross salary means pay before tax and social insurance deductions. These figures change by calendar year, so always use the threshold relevant to your application.

03

Put the evidence together before you apply

Keep the job description, contract duration, gross annual salary, qualification and proof of its status together. An anabin listing for your university alone may not establish that your particular degree is comparable. If the qualification evidence is unclear, resolve that question before you count on a visa timeline. Your current country of residence also affects which German mission handles the application.

A salary above the threshold does not make every job eligible. Equally, missing the Blue Card threshold does not necessarily end your plans. A skilled worker visa or another work route may deserve consideration. The useful question is which route fits your full situation.

  • job description
  • contract duration
  • gross annual salary
  • qualification
  • proof of its status
