EU Blue Card

Can you change employers on a Blue Card, and what if your job ends?

A job change is possible, but notification matters in the first year. If employment ends, act promptly and seek guidance for your individual residence position.

At a glance

  • Current EU Blue Card rules allow a holder to change employment.
  • If the change takes place during the first twelve months of employment, the local foreigners authority must be informed about the new job.
  • Losing a job does not necessarily mean the Blue Card disappears that day, but the purpose of the work residence title has changed.
  • Official guidance describes a job search period that can differ according to how long the Blue Card has been held.
  • If a new position does not reach the Blue Card salary threshold, another work residence route might be possible.

Changing jobs in the first year

Current EU Blue Card rules allow a holder to change employment. If the change takes place during the first twelve months of employment, the local foreigners authority must be informed about the new job. The authority can examine whether the role and salary still meet Blue Card conditions. Where they do not, a different work residence title may be considered.

After the first year, read the wording of your residence card and any supplementary sheet before signing the next contract. Some older documents show restrictions or name a specific employer. Clarify any such condition with the responsible authority rather than relying on another person's account from a different city.

When employment ends early

Losing a job does not necessarily mean the Blue Card disappears that day, but the purpose of the work residence title has changed. Notify the responsible authority and ask what time is available to search for another job or consider a change of status. Official guidance describes a job search period that can differ according to how long the Blue Card has been held. A forum post cannot establish your personal deadline.

The end date of the job, the validity of the card, insurance, available funds and prospects of a new offer all matter. If a new position does not reach the Blue Card salary threshold, another work residence route might be possible. The printed expiry date alone is not a reason to ignore the change.

  • The end date of the job
  • the validity of the card
  • insurance
  • available funds
  • prospects of a new offer

Keep the next conversation factual

Gather the old contract and termination notice, residence card, supplementary sheet, payslips and any new offer. Then use the official channel of your local foreigners authority to report the change and clarify the file. If your family lives in Germany with you, ask about any effect on their residence too.

  • the old contract
  • termination notice
  • residence card
  • supplementary sheet
  • payslips
  • any new offer

Tell Dewayz when your Blue Card began, when employment changes and what a new offer contains so the key questions can be identified.
