An exception with defined boundaries
Most Blue Card applicants rely on an eligible university degree or comparable tertiary qualification. Germany also has a particular route for IT specialists and managers without a formal qualification. It does not mean that experience in any profession can automatically replace a degree.
The main conditions
The official guidance requires a concrete IT job offer in Germany lasting at least six months. The gross annual salary must reach at least €45,934.20 in 2026. The applicant must have at least three years of relevant IT professional experience within the past seven years. That experience must be at a level comparable to higher education and necessary for the proposed role.
Assessing experience is more than counting years. The duties you performed, level of responsibility, employment records and connection to the new role all matter. The competent authorities and Federal Employment Agency may examine the experience within the process. A CV listing company names without explaining the work may leave the central question unanswered.
- The duties you performed
- level of responsibility
- employment records
- connection to the new role
What should you prepare?
Start with the job offer or contract, a detailed role description, employment letters with dates and responsibilities, available evidence of employment, and a clear CV. The responsible German mission or authority sets the final document list. If you do have a degree but its status is unclear, compare the standard qualification route with the IT experience exception before assuming one is easier.
If this exception does not fit, other routes for people with professional experience may still merit review. Your actual job, qualifications and salary should lead the comparison.
- the job offer or contract
- a detailed role description
- employment letters with dates and responsibilities
- available evidence of employment
- a clear CV
